Make Sure Summer is Safe for Your Kids

standing on surfboardSummer is often one of the best times of the year. It is always a great time for kids to participate in various indoor and outdoor sports, games and activities. Whether younger or older, there are ways that you can keep children of every age safe while they enjoy the warm weather.

In the Water

If your children will be participating in any of the great water-related activities available to them, make sure they are staying safe. Prevent water-related illnesses and make sure your child is aware of how to stay safe near the water. Drownings are a leading cause of death and injury for children between the ages of 1 and 4.

In the Heat

Heat-related illnesses occur when the body’s temperature becomes too high and the body’s ability to cool itself is reduced. Infants and toddlers are at the greatest risk for heat-related illnesses, but anyone can suffer from them.

Do not leave infants or children in a hot car, even if the windows are cracked. Keep kids dressed in light, loose layers, and limit the time spent participating in outdoor activities. You can help keep your child cool by giving them cool baths or showers when the temperatures soar.

Injuries

Emergency departments see children who have been injured on playgrounds by the thousands. Falls at home are another reason that these medical professionals treat little ones. Always supervise your children when they are outside, make sure that trip and fall hazards are picked up in and around your home, and learn what to do if your child is injured.

Bugs and Insects

Diseases like Lyme, West Nile virus and Zika are transmitted by biting insects. Always spray or wipe your children with a safe insect repellent if they are going to be playing outside, and check yourself and your children for ticks before you come in the house. You may want to consider using insect-killing fertilizer or additives in your yard.

The summer doesn’t have to mean danger for your children. Use these tips to help ensure that your children are safe this season.
