Teacher Involved in Kayaking Accident

Kayaking on a Lake

AUSTIN, TX – A teacher at Austin Discovery School was killed at the beginning of the month after a kayak he was riding in was involved in an accident.

According to reports, Julian Dahmen, 31, was kayaking with Kera Kinack, his girlfriend. The pair were spending a Saturday evening on Lake Buchanan. Unfortunately for the two, the lake waters were choppy, and Dahmen’s kayak filled with water. Kinack made it back to shore. Both were alums of St. Edward’s University.

Dahmen’s body was found the next day by Texas Game Wardens. Co-workers and former classmates of the two were quick to express their sorrow at the loss of the popular teacher.

Officials urged operators of any type of vessel to be very aware of the waters that they plan on navigating. Waters can quickly become dangerous as storms or high winds turn them up. Even experienced boaters in large vessels can have a difficult time manning their boats in a safe manner.

Game Warden staff also urge people to file boating plans with friends or relatives before heading out. Letting people know where you plan on going helps to ensure that someone will phone authorities in the event that you are not heard from within a normal or agreed upon time frame.
