What to do After a Car Accident

car-accident-loewy-law-firm-austin-texasWith the holidays upon us, it seems like everyone is travelling. If you’re driving long distances this holiday season, make sure to be extra careful on the road. Accidents are more likely to happen because of anxious and impatient drivers, and patience seems to dwindle after hours on the road. If you do happen to find yourself in the unfortunate circumstance of a car accident, here are some steps to make sure you complete after the accident happens.

  1. Make sure everyone is safe.
Check on everyone involved in the accident, and call an ambulance if anyone is injured. In a collision, the body’s defenses all go off, and the adrenaline may mask the pain and how serious an injury really is. Don’t believe anyone if they say they feel find. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

  2. Put out cones or warning triangles.
If you planned ahead and kept cones, warning triangles, or flares with you, put them out around your area to alert other drivers and oncoming traffic of your presence. The last thing you want is for more accidents to happen while you’re waiting to resolve this one.

  3. Stay calm.

  4. Call the police.
Even if the accident is not too serious, it’s always a good idea to just go ahead and call the police so that it can get cited and recorded.

  5. Collect information.
Get all of the standard information facts from the other driver (license, insurance, car info, etc) and take note of the location and road conditions of where the accident happened. Take pictures if possible.

  6. Contact your insurance company.
They like to know things as soon as possible, so get on their good side from the start.
