Biggest Lakes in Texas

Lake-livingston-shoreBoating is a popular pastime in Texas, and many people think of the ocean when they consider taking their vessel out on the open water. Fortunately for the millions of people who don’t live near the ocean, Texas is home to some very large lakes. Here is a list of some of the biggest.

1. Toledo Bend Reservoir

This man-made lake is smack on the border of Texas and Louisiana and is the biggest lake in the state. With a surface area of 185,000 acres, there are 1,200 miles of shoreline. The reservoir is a popular destination for freshwater fishing, hiking, hunting and camping.

2. Sam Rayburn Reservoir

You will find this reservoir near Beaumont. A surface area of over 114,500 acres makes this the biggest lake wholly in the state of Texas. The reservoir was completed in 1965 and has since become a popular destination for boaters from across the state.

3. Lake Livingston

This is the second-largest lake completely entrapped by the state’s borders. Boating and camping are the most popular activities at this lake that sits about halfway between Houston and Dallas. There are more than 5,000 campsites at the lake.

4. Lake Texoma

This body of water has a surface area of approximately 89,000 acres. It is located on the border of Oklahoma and Texas (hence the name). A dam and several small islands make this a favorite destination among the locals and a popular spring break spot for college students. Bass and catfish are abundant, making this a hot spot for fishermen.

5. Richland-Chambers Reservoir

If you are looking for a lake in East Texas, this one can’t be missed. Finished in 1989, the reservoir encompasses tens of thousands of acres and is popular for hiking, swimming and fishing.
