One of the most prestigious rating services for those in the legal industry is the Super Lawyers® selection process. This is a multi-phased process that evaluates attorneys throughout the nation based on several different indicators, creating a list to honor those who have established themselves as clear leaders in the industry. According to the New Jersey Supreme Court, “[The Super Lawyers® selection process] is a comprehensive, good-faith and detailed attempt to produce a list of lawyers that have attained high peer recognition, meet ethical standards, and have demonstrated some degree of achievement in their field.”
Explanation of the Super Lawyers® Selection Process
So how does the selection process work? First, a candidate pool is created by both formal peer nominations, the Super Lawyers® research team and informal nominations. The process allows for multiple sources for the nominations, however, does not allow for individual attorneys to either nominate themselves or campaign for a nomination. It also has several safeguards in place to keep from less than credible nominations getting through; for example, they seek to actively block any attempts at what they refer to as “back-scratch” nominations where one attorney will nominate another in an attempt to get a reciprocal nomination.
After the candidate pool has been created, it will move onto the second phase. During this, the candidates will be judged by the Super Lawyers® research department on twelve different indicators. These indicators are not all treated equally and will be given various points based on the point value of each. These include everything from verdicts and settlements to representative clients, experience, other honors and awards, as well as special certifications, community service and even education and employment background.
The next step in the selection process including what is referred to as the “blue ribbon review.” During this process, all of the candidates are put together based upon their main area of practice. The attorneys in each practice area with the highest point totals so far are taken and placed in the blue ribbon panel – they are then given the list of candidates and are asked to rate them from one to ten. After this has been completed, all candidates are put into four categories based on the size of their firm. From there, those with the highest point totals are selected for inclusion in the Super Lawyers® list. Only five percent from each state are selected.
