Austin Man Struck by Vehicle

crosswalk

AUSTIN, TX – Walking across a street is something that many of take for granted. We believe that we will make it safely to the other side. Unfortunately, that is not how the action played out for an Austin man early Sunday morning.

Police report that a 39-year old Austin man was crossing the street on the frontage road of the 2200 block of East Anderson Lane. As the mat was attempting to cross the road from north to south, a car traveling westbound stuck the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident that occurred just before 3:30 a.m. The driver of the vehicle that struck the man remained on the scene. As of this report the investigation is ongoing and the driver is cooperating with police.

Because the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information about the accident to call Austin Police Department Homicide Unit Detectives at 512.974.6935.

Staying Safe On Your Feet

No one expects to be struck by a vehicle when they are crossing the road, but accidents do happen. Here are tips that can help you make it to the other side safely.

Look both ways. Your parents taught you to look both ways before you cross the street. It is important that you follow that lesson as an adult.

Use marked walkways. Do not cross the street outside of crosswalks when they are present. If they are not, cross at a traffic light or stop sign.

Make eye contact. Never assume that a driver sees you simply because you see their vehicle. Make eye contact with the driver or keep your feet firmly planted on the sidewalk.

Avoid barriers. Construction is fairly common in Austin. Do not stand near any type of barrier or pile of material as you prepare to cross the road. Not only is your vision impeded, but so is that of any driver.

Wear light clothing. If you are walking at night, wear light or reflective clothing. This cannot always be accomplished if you do not plan to walk, but make your best effort.
