Motorcycle Accident Serves as Safety Reminder

A motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a motorcycle’s driver remains under investigation by Austin Police.

The crash occurred in Downtown Austin on Wednesday morning along North MoPac near Fifth Street. Just after 8:30 a.m., police responded to the scene and transported the man to University of Medical Center Brackenridge where he later died.

Although the accident is still under investigation, drivers on the road with the man report that he was observed to be driving recklessly considering the traffic at the time. The man was observed to be traveling at high rates of speed as he dodged between cars on the road. The accident closed a northbound lane as well as the eastbound lanes of East Fifth Street.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Austin and around the country. Just last year, 455 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents in Texas. The Texas Department of Transportation has kicked off a campaign called “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcyclists.”

The goal of the campaign is to raise safety awareness and reduce the number of motorcycle crashes in the state. Members of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Austin Police Department, Austin-Travis County EMS, and Texas Patriot Guard Riders are supporters of the campaign.

It is clear that no one leaves their home expecting to be involved in a collision that could possibly be life-altering for all involved. Driving with the understanding that we must all share the same roads is essential to everyone’s safety. The responsibility falls upon all drivers, not just those in cars, and not only those on motorcycles.

If you want to avoid a collision, obey the rules of the road. Adjust your driving habits so that you can move safely on congested streets. Don’t pass cars when it is not obviously safe to do so. If you are involved in an accident, you may be entitled to compensation.
