Multiple DUIs Net Life in Prison

442-whisky-alcohol-drinksHow many people are serving life sentences for DWI arrests? If you are speaking of Texas, the answer is 32. The majority of people serving life are from Williamson County, with Hays County poised to take the lead.

Some people wonder how it can happen, and others wonder why it doesn’t happen more often. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice detail several people who are sitting behind bars for the rest of their days, thanks to poor choices.

One such person is Rose Ann Davidson. Pulled over in 2013, Davidson was handed her 6th DWI arrest. On this night, her blood alcohol content measured .21. That number is close to triple the legal limit. Davidson was found guilty and given a sentence of life in prison.

Luis Govea is another example. Already doing time for DWI, Govea was given a compassionate release after it was discovered he was suffering with liver disease. Shortly after his release, he was back behind bars for driving under the influence. Govea was sentenced to prison again, but this time, he won’t be getting out.

To qualify for a life sentence after being found guilty of a DWI, a person must have at least five prior convictions for that offense. Two of those offenses must have resulted in prison time. People are also considered eligible for a life sentence if they have three previous DWIs and two felonies of a different nature.

According to Hays County District Attorney, Wes Mau, “That person is a danger to society. If life is the only way to protect that person from society, then that’s what we have to do.”

Currently, there are 32 drunk drivers who are sitting behind bars for life. Williamson and Montgomery Counties rank at the top with four convicted drivers a piece.

The district attorney understands that there may be people committing violent crimes who get less time than these repeat offenders but, according to Mau, these people may be more dangerous. He equates their persistent actions with walking through the streets with a loaded hand grenade, daring people to stop them.
