Businesses Damaged After Being Hit By Car

AUSTIN, TX – This past Sunday was anything but a day of rest and relaxation for law enforcement and fire officials in the city of Austin. The first responders worked tirelessly investigating a crash at the Arbor Walk shopping center.

Just before 5 a.m., a Nissan Altima went airborne, caught fire, and landed in a building. The incident began when the car crashed through a barrier on the Braker Lane off-ramp along MoPac Boulevard. The building the car landed in contained several businesses.

According to officials, four people were pronounced dead on scene. Each person was burned beyond recognition, making identification impossible. It is expected that dental records will be utilized to identify those killed.

Palmer Buck, of the Austin Fire Department, said that speed is assumed to be a contributing factor. “That’s our assumption, to go all the way and impact the building, certainly a fair distance in the air. It’s tragic,” said Buck.

The businesses impacted include Sport Clips, Massage Envy, and Mattress Firm among others. It was expected to take several hours to restore electrical services to the building.

In this year alone, Austin has experienced 71 traffic fatalities. That number is 30 more than were reported at this same time in 2014. Police say that these avoidable accidents must be prevented. Obeying the rules of the road is one way to accomplish this. Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted, “Another tragedy preventable loss of life. Sad way to start day.”

The investigation into the accident is ongoing. The exact amount of damage to the businesses on Arbor Walk is unknown at this time.
