How to Get a Tailgater Off Your Bumper

We have all been there. We are driving down the road at the posted speed limit, look in the rearview mirror and see headlights shining just a bit too brightly. We have become the victims of tailgaters. These people are in such a hurry to get where they are going that they think riding within inches of the car in front of them is going to make it happen.

Here’s how you can handle the situation without getting into an altercation with the other driver or an accident.

  1. Keep Your Cool

No matter what you do, remain calm. When you lose control of your emotions, you can very quickly lose control of your vehicle. Take a few deep breaths and keep your eyes focused on the road in front of you.

  1. Pull Over

If you have the opportunity to do so, pull over and let the other car pass you. This is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get rid of a tailgater. If you need to, pull into a driveway and wait for the car to pass before you head back down the road.

  1. Move Over

If you can’t pull over, gradually slow your speed and move away from the center of the road. This will give the driver behind you the time and space necessary to pass you safely. Remember, this is probably their ultimate goal and allowing them to pass is the best thing you can do.

  1. Do Not Contribute to the Problem

Your first instinct may be to slow down and “show” the other driver that they are being reckless. Avoid the urge. If you begin to contribute to the problem you may very well find yourself in road rage incident that could have been avoided.

  1. Call for Assistance

If you have tried to allow the driver to pass you to no avail and they won’t get off your bumper, call 911 for assistance. If you choose to do this, you will need to know your location so you can report it to the authorities.

Whatever you choose to do, do it with your safety and the safety of others in mind. Getting rid of a tailgater is a fairly easy thing to do as long as you can keep your cool.
