Texas Legislature Pass Law Against Hit and Run Drivers

The Texas House passed a new law 130-0 which increases the penalties for drivers for who leave the scene of an accident. The Senate previously passed the bill and Governor Perry is expected to sign it. Austin’s Senator Kirk Watson introduced the legislation. The legislation was passed in response to the tragic death of Courtney Griffin of Austin. Ms. Griffin was walking home late at night when she was hit Gabrielle Nestande, who had been drinking and driving. Ms. Nestande drove off and only received a 10 year probated sentence. Pregnant Woman Among Injured in Austin Car Accident

A pregnant woman and five other passengers were injured when a car slammed into the steps of a home on Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses say that the pregnant woman may have suffered serious injuries. “I was sitting right here on the corner,” a witness said, “it all happened so fast.” The 17-year-old witness was forced to jump out of way when a blue sedan was pushed off the road by another vehicle into the front porch of the home. KVUE news covered a tragic story regarding a young woman, Katy Palmer, and her boyfriend who were involved in a hit and run collision during South by Southwest in Austin. Hays County Accident Kills Two, Injures Five

A car accident in Buda, TX that involved a senior center bus and an SUV caused two deaths and five injuries today. Local law enforcement said that the accident occurred this afternoon when the driver of an SUV swerved into the opposite lane and collided with a bus from the Creekside Villas Senior Village Apartments. The driver of the SUV and one bus passenger died in the accident. Five additional passengers were injured, including one critical injury.
