According to the Austin-American Statesman, on May 7, an Austin was hit by a Nissan Altima on North Lamar Blvd. The man was rushed to Brackenridge Hospital but tragically died from his injuries. Texas Legislature Pass Law Against Hit and Run Drivers

The Texas House passed a new law 130-0 which increases the penalties for drivers for who leave the scene of an accident. The Senate previously passed the bill and Governor Perry is expected to sign it. Austin’s Senator Kirk Watson introduced the legislation. The legislation was passed in response to the tragic death of Courtney Griffin of Austin. Pregnant Woman Among Injured in Austin Car Accident

A pregnant woman and five other passengers were injured when a car slammed into the steps of a home on Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses say that the pregnant woman may have suffered serious injuries. “I was sitting right here on the corner,” a witness said, “it all happened so fast.” The 17-year-old witness was forced to jump out of way when a blue sedan was pushed off the road by another vehicle into the front porch of the home. Biker Seriously Injured by Driver on Cell Phone

KXAN news reported a tragic story involving Austin resident Bobby Crouch, who was seriously injured while biking on Barton Creek Blvd near Bee Caves Road. Crouch was hit from behind by a 20 yr old car driver, who was on his cell phone and not paying attention to the road. KVUE news covered a tragic story regarding a young woman, Katy Palmer, and her boyfriend who were involved in a hit and run collision during South by Southwest in Austin. The driver of the car shamefully drove off and the police and Palmer’s family are actively looking for him. Palmer was killed and her boyfriend sustained a head injury. Hays County Accident Kills Two, Injures Five

A car accident in Buda, TX that involved a senior center bus and an SUV caused two deaths and five injuries today. Local law enforcement said that the accident occurred this afternoon when the driver of an SUV swerved into the opposite lane and collided with a bus from the Creekside Villas Senior Village Apartments. A fire at the ExxonMobil Refinery in Beaumont resulted in 12 injuries last week, leaving one victim with critical burns. According to ABC News, other victims were left with broken bones and less severe burns. A spokeswoman for ExxonMobil said that the fire occurred at 10:30 last Wednesday morning in a processing unit that was closed for maintenance. The unit was used to process crude oil. Fertilizer Plant Explosion Causes 35 Fatalities in West, Texas

A fertilizer plant in West, Texas exploded, resulting in at least 35 deaths. According to news sources, an additional 160 people were injured in the explosion that Texas Gov. Rick Perry called “a nightmare scenario.” Among those killed were first responders. Additionally, more than 75 homes, a middle school, and a nursing home were destroyed or badly damaged in the mile-wide blast.
